Heart Sutra (English Version)

 I heard that at one time Lord Buddha was staying in Rajagriha on Graddhakuta mountain with a great union of monks and federation of bodhisattvas, at that time Lord Buddha was absorbed in a religious samadhi called Gambhir-Avabhasa. Then at the same time, the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva Arya Avalokiteshvara also glanced at the serious practice of the Paramita of Wisdom and saw the emptiness in the nature of those five skandhas. Thereafter, under the influence of the Buddha, Ayushman Shariputra said to the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva Arya Avalokiteshvara, what kind of education should be taken by Kulputra or Kulputri those who are desirous of the stage of the serious practice of the Prajnaparamita?

                       As soon as he said this, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva Arya Avalokiteshvara told Ayushman Shariputra like this - Shariputra! Whoever Kulputra or Kulputri is desirous of following the serious practice of virtuous Prajnaparamita, he should look upon it as follows:

“O, Sariputra, form does not differ from voidness, and voidness does not differ from form. Form is voidness and the void is form; the same is true for feeling, conception, volition and consciousness .

“Sariputra, the characteristics of the voidness of all dharmas are non-arising, non-ceasing, non-defiled, non-pure, non-increasing, non-decreasing.

“Therefore, in the void there is no form, feeling, conception, volition or consciousness ,

No eye, ear, nose, tongue, body or mind; no form, sound, smell, taste, touch, mind-object, or eye realm, until we come to no realm of consciousness;

No ignorance and also no ending of ignorance, until we come to no old age and death and no ending of old age and death.

“Also, there is no truth of suffering, of the cause of suffering, of the cessation of suffering, or of the Path.

“There is no wisdom, and there is no attainment whatso-ever.

“Because there is nothing to be attained, the Bodhisattva, relying on the Prajna Paramita, has no obstruction in his mind.

“Because there is no obstruction, he has no fear;

And, thus, he passes far beyond confused imagination

And reaches Ultimate Nirvana.

“The Buddhas of the past, present and future, also relying on the Prajna Paramita, have attained Supreme Enlightenment.

“Therefore, the Prajna Paramita is the great spell of knowledge, the great spell of illumination, the supreme spell, which can truly protect one from all suffering without fail.”

Hence, he uttered the spell of the Prajna Paramita, saying, “Gate, Gate, Paragate, Parasamgate. Bodhi, Svaha!”

                     After that Lord Buddha got up from that samadhi and thanked the Bodhisattva Mahasattva Arya Avalokiteshvara - Sadhu, Sadhu, Kulaputra! It is so, it is as you have specified; so as practice the practice of serious Parmita of Wisdom. Thus the Tathagatas (of all the three periods) also endorsed it. When Lord Buddha preached in this way, all the council including Ayushman Shariputra, Bodhisattva Mahasattva Arya Avalokiteshvara and all the people including gods, humans, asuras, and Gandharvas approved and praised the teachings of Lord Buddha.
